“Bench” – Steel Sculpture

I’ll be posting some of my visual works on this site as well. Here is one I did when I was at MIT – a welded steel sculpture entitled “Bench.”
1995, Cambridge, MA. Welded Steel Sculpture, inspired by Joan Miro. Recipient, Vera List Prize.

Joan Miro’s paintings create a fully alternate universe. Characters float in an alien landscape with its own logic and physical rules. I wanted to bring a part of this landscape to life in our world.

With ‘Bench’ I tried to capture the essence of an object from Miro’s world—the lines and proportions, the sense of humor, the unweighted qualities—while creating something quintessentially of this world. Solidly existing as a means of support, a piece of furniture, this sculpture transcends the everyday and transports one, however briefly, into another realm.
